If you can find a cheap bench motor it would make life easier. Also I didn't use the proper polishing and cutting compounds so took much longer than it could have done. you can buy all the mops and compound on the net - google metal polishing. Your way sounds painful!!
I'm lucky to have a polishing lathe and micro sand blaster at work (I'm a Dental Technician) so I stripped the anodizing by blasting with glass bead, then spent time with rubber wheels and a sort of Dremel smoothing casting marks etc then polished with calico mops and polishing compound on the lathe. It's a lot of hard work and the spider crank took several hours!!! I was going to use these parts on my new build but then got a deal on better spec parts I couldn't refuse!! Got a nice polished Campy headset coming up for sale!!
I do support Chelsea and have a coupe of season tickets. Until the season before last, I was also an away ST holder but now work and cycling do not allow that time commitment. West lower gate 3 row 10, the two seats immediately to the left of the aisle as you are going towards the pitch. Pop and say hello if you are ever in that region.
