I've been working as an EMT on the mean streets of SE18 for a few years and have had to undergo selection assessments and exams, a year of pre course study, an 8 week course of lectures, scenarios and role play assessments, many written and multi choice exams, modules on advanced life support, trauma life support and management, obstetrics, paediatrics, paramedic drugs,ECG recognition and loads more. I still have to go to hospital starting next week, and work under a consultant anaesthatist and an A&E consultant for 4 weeks before being unleashed on you lot, but as you may have gathered I'm well happy!
Thanks for listening, you've been a wonderful audience, g'night

I broke my wrist a couple nights ago and am now going to be in a cast for at least 4 weeks but the doctors said it is a funny break so it might be longer and I can't see me being able to stay off my bikes for that long. I was just wondering if anyone on here has managed to ride with a cast on their hand/forearm, and if so how you made it comfortable. I rode slowly around my university site yesterday and found it a little irritating, especially when braking but I can always put my brake cable on the other side.

and just to add, before I get wrecked, I am not in London at the moment so I won't be dealing with buses and heavy traffic. I am at uni in Bangor which has an estimated population of 12 so there aren't many cars about.

any help would be apprectiated.

Women-only march
Reclaim The Night 2009
Saturday 21st November 2009

Assemble Whitehall Place, central London for women’s march to Camden Centre.

Mixed Rally and Party till late:
Camden Centre

Why?
According to the British Crime Survey (2001) there are an estimated 47,000 rapes every year, around 40,000 attempted rapes and over 300,000 sexual assaults. Yet our conviction rate is the lowest it has ever been, one of the lowest in Europe, at only 5.3%. This means that more rapists were convicted in the 1970s when Reclaim The Night marches first started than they are now. Did you know that the maximum sentence possible for rape is life imprisonment? Probably not, because rarely are rapists even reported or convicted, let alone with a realistic sentence. This situation has to change.

We march to demand justice for rape survivors.

A recent survey by the young women’s magazine More in 2005 found that 95% of women don’t feel safe on the streets at night, and 65% don’t even feel safe during the day. 73% worry about being raped and almost half say they sometimes don’t want to go out because they fear for their own safety.

In every sphere of life we negotiate the threat or reality of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment. We cannot claim equal citizenship while this threat restricts our lives as it does. We demand the right to use public space without fear. We demand this right as a civil liberty, we demand this as a human right.

The Reclaim The Night march gives women a voice and a chance to reclaim the streets at night on a safe and empowering event. We aim to put the issue of our safety on the agenda for this night and every day.

The Reclaim The Night marches started in the UK in the 1970s. In America they are known as ‘Take Back The Night’ and the first one was held in West Germany on April 30th 1977. In Britain they first began on 12th November 1977 when marches took place in Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, London and many other cities. The Reclaim the Night marches became even more significant when, in following years, a man called Peter Sutcliffe began murdering prostitute women in and around Leeds. Feminists in the area were angry that the police response to these murders was slow and that the press barely reported on them. It seemed that it was only when young student women began to fall victim to this serial killer that the police started to take the situation seriously. Their response was to warn all women not to go out at night. This was not a helpful suggestion for any woman, let alone for those women involved in prostitution who often had no choice about whether they went out at night or not. Feminists and a variety of women’s and student groups were angered by this response. So they organised a resistance of torch-lit marches and demonstrations — they walked in their hundreds through the city streets at night to highlight that they should be able to walk anywhere and that they should not be blamed or restricted because of male violence.

Note to men:
In my experience, at the mixed rally and party you will be very welcome. This is great way to support the women (mom, sister, girlfriend, daughter) in your life. If you have kids this is often a really comfortable place to bring them.

"The light was fading and there were no floodlights for the evening racing... As I started the crowd was unbelievable... I had chosen to ride a 92.5'' gear."

A month or so ago I went to visit my parents up in the Midlands and while I was at it I went to a jumble sale that was going on. One of the DVD stalls had a bunch of postcards depicting Tommy Godwin in action at the '48 Olympics at Herne Hill; I asked how much they were and the geezer said, "50p - and if you ask that man over there nicely he'll sign them for you". Tommy Godwin was sitting behind the one of the stalls. He's 87.. I got a bit excited.

I bought four postcards and wondered if it was being too cheeky asking him to sign all of them.. I waited for him to finish talking with a seller and then the stallholder introduced me to him and we started chatting.

He's amazing. He has a zest for life that someone half his age struggles to muster, and he radiates vitality; his enthusiasm for talking bikes hasn't diminished a jot since he was a kid. He is in awe of the life cycling has brought him and feels truly honoured to have been lucky enough to have made a mark on British cycling history. But outside of cycling he's just a very happy, very chatty guy - an old-timer's eye for the ladies, a devoted husband, happy to talk the hind leg off a donkey. He doesn't look anything like 87, it's quite something.

I asked him if he still rode.. "No, I've got a mountain bike and up to a few years ago I still rode it to the shops, but my wife won't let me any more! oh well.." ... it's undertandable at his age I guess.

He's enjoying being part of the preparations for the 2012 Olympics, travelling round sites as an ambassador and doing interviews - he's really enthusiastic about the venues and facilities. We chatted about Herne Hill and I told him a bunch of us still ride there; he was really taken that people were still using it week in week out and hoped it was going to continue on surviving.

It's well known about his toad in the hole and spam fritters before his Olympic bid - as he has said before, you ate what you could get.. but rationing wasn't the only influence World War Two had on the '48 Olympics.. I like what he said in an interview with Emine Saner for the Guardian:

"It didn’t have the hype that it does now, but after the war and with the whole world still in turmoil, to take the Olympic Games on was a wonderful thing. It was the youth of the world getting together and you just enjoyed yourself - if you got a medal, you were very proud but you knew it wouldn’t make a very big difference to your life. I came back and people at work were, ‘Ooh, you’ve won a medal’.”

This down-to-earth quality is still everything Tommy is about. But his natural ability to engage with people - immediately and enthusiastically - is a quality that is rare. He's a proper charmer. What a guy.

This guy cut me up changing lanes whilst on his mobile on Old St, at 12:15 - coming up to the golden lane/central st crossroads. forced me to jump off my bike (the fucking Moser) and onto the pavement. I gave chase and caught him at the next lights, called him a cunt and asked him why he was on his mobile without a headset. He called me a cunt back in a eastern european accent (racist!) and told me he didn't care, and drove off while still on his mobile. He kept talking on his mobile through another 4 sets of lights, along clerkenwell/theobalds. I could see that his mirrors weren't adjusted properly, one of them was almost folded in on it self. Have reported it to the police, but just a warning to watch out for this guy as he obviously doesn't give a shit about other road users.
